21 December

Been along time, been a long time, been a long lo...well, not so lonely in fact. I've been doing loads of things and meeting loads of people. That's why there haven't been any recipes for ages. Sveta and I have put in a lot of travelling over the last few months. We've been exploring the Caucasus and Turkey. I'm writing from Yerevan in Armenia but the day after tomorrow we're off to India for a month of sunshine. It's been great here, but it's getting a little cold. There's snow and ice on the ground and everything has gone all monochrome. There's a word that takes me back...The Monochrome Set, Monochrome Set, Monochrome Se-e-e-et. Whatever happened to them? Good songs, daft name.

We were in Istanbul last week and I had the best avocados I ever tasted. They were from Antalya. We didn't do anything fancy with them - just cut them in half and ate them - but there are lots of good dishes you can make with avocado as an ingredient. There are a few on my avocado recipes page and I've posted a two ones in this update. And that's about it....

New recipes
pasta with avocado and spinach
basil and bean salad
avocado pasta salad

pigeons sitting on wiresWow! Howzat? Another update within a couple of weeks. I got stuck for a few days, trying to get motivated enough to dig out the mincer again for the olive tapenades. Once I'd cleaned and dismantled it and packed it away, it seemed an awful lot of trouble to get it out again. But I did eventually.

New recipes
green olive tapenade
black olive tapenade
stir-fried mushroom and aubergine with coconut
lettuce and cream cheese trumpets
cabbage cream salad

This update, we begin with a picture of some ants shifting a fragment of crisp. I say 'crisp' but of course that would be 'potato chip' for our US readers. I took this photo in south India - I'm not sure whether peple say 'crisp' or 'chip' there when they're speaking English. Indeed, since the deep-fried crispy snack was probably invented in India, it would come as no surprise if Indians have their very own English word. Whatever it's called, the ants seem to like it.

I've been unusually busy lately. It's not often I post two updates in the same month. I used to do it a long time ago - way back at the beginning when I was just starting the site, but the last while, I've grown kinda lazy. This may be just a temporary burst of enthusiasm, but let's see; maybe I can keep it up.

New recipes
fat-free lentil pate
mushroom pate
aubergine caviar
stuffed courgettes
cherry-tomato and pine-nut salad
spinach, feta and red onion salad

New photo pages
Crazy horses

New cartoons
Vegan footwear

The second update of the year! Ya lazy so-and-so, Macbean!

My cartoons are still as lame as ever.

The handle came off the oven door last week. I'm thinking it really is time to get a new cooker.

1 April

An appropriate date, I think. I finally got round to writing up some new recipes. Been travelling a lot recently. Started in India in December, then on to Malaysia and up to Thailand. We liked Malaysia so much we had to go back and we travelled down through the peninsula to Singapore. Back in Central Asia for a month and we spent the time back and forward between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. The road between Almaty and Bishkek has finally been fully repaired after four years of major roadworks and diversions. It now takes a matter of hours to do the journey instead of the whole day.

I've got loads of photos to put up but they'll have to wait till next time (along with a load more yummy recipes I've worked out lately but haven't had time to post). Sveta and I are off to Portugal tonight then next week we'll be going to the UK - a few days in England then up to Scotland to visit mum and dad. A wee stop-over of a couple of days in Amsterdam might be in order if we have time on the way back. Should be at the computer again by the end of April.

As usual I'll be trying to update my travelblog periodically while we're on the road.

New recipes
carrot and rosemary soup
fried green beans and beansprouts
baked beetroot
bruschetta
spinach and pistachio salad
baked potatoes
