Armenian Gulls, Lake Sevan, June 2007

Up until a few years ago, any big, white-headed seagulls you'd see would each belong to one of a relatively few species, although each would also be considered, by those in the know, to belong to a particular subspecies. In fact, that's not quite true, because, depending on who you asked, your gull might turn out to belong to any of a whole bunch of subspecies and you'd get all different opinions. You'd end up thoroughly confused as to what you were really looking at. Not much has changed, these days, except that there are a lot more new species being described and the experts tend to argue more over whether one species is really a species and not simply a subspecies of another (and if so, of which?). But who really cares? Armenian gulls are just as graceful today as they were back then. One of the best places to see them is at Lake Sevan in central Armenia, and even if you don't come for the gulls, that's a place well worth the visit. Ask any Armenian.
