It takes about an hour to get to Lama from Central Hong Kong. It's a lovely place to spend a day and makes a great break from the crowds and noise of the city.
As the boat approaches the island pier, on one side you get a view of these very picturesque little houses on stilts. On the other side you get this weird view of the island's power station.
Leading inland from the village clustered around the peir, there's a path that goes over to the other side of the Island and not far along the path, there's a small beach, complete with shark-nets and shark-net attendant.
After the beach, if you continue walking you get great views of the power station. The trek to the other side of the island is a long one and if you don't want to catch the ferry over to Aberdeen, you have to walk all the way back again. We turned back halfway and went for lunch at the Bookworm vegetarian cafe, which would be an excellent reason to go all the way to Lama even if there was nothing else on the island.
In the evening we sat in another cafe (we like cafes) by the harbour and watched people coming home from work, doing a wee bit of fishing or paddling about in the harbour. There was one guy paddling around on a big piece of polystyrene. That's him in the picture below right.
