Lan tau Island, Hong Kong 2008

We spent a couple of days on Lan tau in winter. It had been cold for the previous week but on the morning we decided to do a big walk from the bay we were staying at to Discovery Bay, the sun came out. We all got burnt noses. Luckily the clouds came back the next day for our visit to the big Buddha statue.

This is a view of the bay where our hotel was. We were on the way to discovery bay and had just climbed 8 million stairs straight up the hillside from the beach. We thought that must have been the hardest bit over, but it wasn't. It was just half way through the hardest bit. There were another 8 million stairs before we reached the summit point where we got to take this lovely photo over the sea to Kowloon. On the way down the other side to Discovery Bay, we stopped by the Christian monastery (which is nice to look at but, understandably, all very 'Do not disturb -we're deep in contemplation') and sneaked about the grounds for a bit.

Next day we went to see big Buddha. And he really is big. He sits right on top of a hill and you can see him giving you a big wave from miles away. Loads of people go to visit him.

These women sit at the top of the hill, just below the Buddha and if you look across, behind them, you'll see the highest hill on Lan tau. It's only 700-odd metres high, but it's covered in all sorts of jungly stuff and looks as if it would take a bit of serious effort to climb.

And when you get down the hill...look what you find! These guys poking their faces out of the bushes. Magic!

At the bottom, there's the monastery, where you can wander about and visit the vegetarian restaurant, but our advice is 'Take a sandwich.' The food's not very good.
