Liepaja, Latvia, July 2008

Liepaja is on the Baltic coast about 230 km from Riga. The beach is fantastic. You can find pieces of amber on it and the water is clean and clear. It's cold too. If you're really brave, you can go for a skinny-dip on the nudist beach, but you probably won't stay in the water long.

Liepaja has a bit of a reputation as the home of 1970s Soviet rock. There are lots of monuments and plaques but not much live music happening nowadays. There's a big guitar sculpture as well but I didn't take a photo of it.

There are a lot of beautiful old wooden buildings around, many in a state of gentle dilapidation. Some are being restored, but I like the weathered and patched look.

The brick and plaster buildings are quite striking too. Altogether, this is a very picturesque town .
