Penang, Malaysia 2008

We arrived in Georgetown and planned to do some fairly strenuous hiking around the island in the following days. The first night we went out for a meal and on the way back I fell into a ditch while investigating a small garden in the dark. I wasn't drunk. After a couple of days hobbling about, my ankle felt a bit better and we decided to investigate the botanic gardens...

tri-shaw driven Macbean an amazing tree - fernd growning all over the trunk.  could this be a helipad?

Here's a picture of me acting the invalid before we headed off. We took a taxi to the gardens, which are on a hillside on the edge of the city. It's a lovely place to spend a day. Look at this beautiful tree, all covered with little ferns. The circle might be a helipad. And it might not. I liked it either way and took a photo.

There were lots of lizards sunning themselves on the grass. I don't know if these two are the same kind of lizard. They got a bit annoyed when I tried to take their photos and disappeared into the hedge. The monkeys were a lot cheekier. They can be quite aggressive and we saw one stealing an ice cream from a guy who was teasing them. Serves him right.

The next day we took the train up to Penang hill. It's much cooler there than down in the city and it used to be called Strawberry Hill because the hill was cleared to grow strawberries by the British army. I don't know why they did that when there was so much sweet succulent native fruit, but do it they did. The train ride takes about an hour with a brief stop halfway up to change trains.

The city comes into view as the train nears the summit and the views from the ridge at the top are spectacular. There are kilometres of tracks running in either direction from the terminus and it's easy to spend a whole day strolling about.
