Some sculptures in Thailand, January and February 2009
I took a load of photos of sculptures on this trip and I've collected a few of the most interesting ones together in this gallery.
The first three above are from the sea front in Songkhla in south Thailand. I like the centre one best.
Here's a picture of the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho in Bangkok. It's so big it was difficult to get the whole thing in the frame, but I just managed. The next guy is one of the guards at the gate of Wat Pho and the last picture is a dragon at Wat Kaew in Krabi.
And here are a whole bunch of wooden phalae at a cave shrine on Tham Phra Nang beach in Krabi Province. The centre photo shows the Sala Keo Kou sculpture park near Nong Khai in the north west of Thailand and all the remaining pictures are of the sculptures there. They are very entertaining.
In the above left picture you can see how the sculptures were made - plaster and concrete is shaped on a brick and wire form. The results are amazing.
Many of the sculptures are Buddhas but there are some Hindu daieties and some animals and other stuff (like the skeletons above). Here's Lord Ganesha on his rat and Hanuman the monkey god in the middle.... and Jimi Hendrix on the right...
My favourite sculpture in the park is this elephant being hassled by a pack of dogs. It's quite a scary composition, but the big elephant just trundles slowly ahead despite all the dogs snapping at its feet. You can feel that the elephant will still be plodding along long after the dogs have disappeared. The allegory is quite clear, I think.
